In some circumstances, a simple filling can’t repair a tooth. In these situations, Dr. Miller will often recommend that a porcelain crown be used instead. These attractive and durable appliances are designed to completely cover the surface of the affected tooth – right down to the gum line. Years ago, most crowns were made of metal, making them quite noticeable in a person’s mouth. But over the past several years, porcelain crowns have become much more popular. These durable dental appliances can be made to very closely match the color of your existing teeth, which makes them much harder to detect than the old-fashioned metal variety. We are pleased to offer porcelain crowns to our patients from throughout the Austin, TX, area.
Important Information about Porcelain Crowns
The term “porcelain” may be a bit misleading in the case of porcelain crowns. When you think of porcelain, you may envision delicate pieces of china, but porcelain crowns are anything but delicate! The porcelain material used in dental appliances is just the opposite. Not only can it be made to very closely match the color of your existing teeth, it’s also extremely strong and durable. Most porcelain crowns last for many, many years.
The Porcelain Crown Procedure
The procedure involved in getting a new porcelain crown begins with our staff making an impression of your existing tooth. That impression will be used to create your new porcelain crown. After that, Dr. Miller will remove any existing decay in the affected tooth, then he will thoroughly clean the surface. Once your tooth is prepared, we will provide you with a temporary crown that you can wear until your permanent crown is ready – usually about 10 days later. On your second visit, Dr. Miller will fit you with your new porcelain crown, and your tooth will be as good as new!
