Why would my child need a crown?
You may have seen other children with silver crowns on their baby teeth. These crowns are an excellent way to treat teeth with either a large amount of decay, or treat children with decay on numerous teeth. The tooth is shaved down to make room for the crown and the crown is cemented onto the tooth. These crowns have shown to be effective in preventing future decay on that tooth and buy the child time until their permanent teeth come in.
Do the crowns have to be silver?
No the crowns don’t have to be silver, but the silver ones are often used because they are inexpensive, effective, flexible while fitting on the teeth, and durable. There are tooth colored crowns for kids, but are primarily placed on teeth in the front of the mouth.
