Knocking out a tooth (avulsion)

Teeth can get knocked out of the mouth in a variety of ways. If this is the case, time is of the essence. Store the tooth in a glass of milk or your own saliva. The tooth can often be successfully reinserted in the mouth if done so within one hour. The teeth are then splinted together and the patient will return for evaluation and a possible root canal. If the tooth is out of the mouth for over an hour, a root canal is then done right there and then reinserted into the mouth and splinted.
